How to extend the life of hairdressing scissors
Scissors are an extension of the master’s hand. Proper handling of them will help you not only extend the tool’s trouble-free life, but also save your hands. And they, by the way, are tools too. Below we will look at 4 aspects of interacting with your workhorse and give you the right advice.
1. Operation
We will not say that hairdressing scissors should be used only for their intended purpose and not cut foil and wires. It is obvious. But the tool will be completely safe only if you own the correct haircut technique. Very often, novice masters can meet a characteristic technical error – their brush presses on the rings in two planes, that is, they not only set the canvas in motion, but also apply a transverse force to the tool. This leads to difficulty in moving (the master is forced to loosen the screw, which leads to a violation of the quality of the cut) and increased friction of the blades. Result: increased wear of the blades, feeling that the scissors do not cut. First, the master needs to work on himself, and then pick up an expensive tool.
2. Care
Tool care is the main condition for its longevity. These are simple procedures that determine the service life. Moreover, following the recommendations from points 1 and 2, you may not need to read 3 and 4.
After each haircut, you need to wipe the blades, and after the change, clean the scissors completely:
– You need to wipe the blades because grease and hair fragments collect on them, which directly affects the quality of the cut. At thinning scissors, you need to clean the space between the teeth – an excellent reservoir for foreign deposits.
– It is necessary to rinse the screw group (there are special solutions for this, but many use the usual WD-40) because during operation the connection area collects a certain amount of small hairs and fat. All this makes it difficult for the blades to move, and in advanced cases it accumulates in a thick layer and changes the angle of contact of the blades. The master is forced to loosen the screw, which leads to a gap. This, in turn, affects the quality of the cut. Looks like it’s time to sharpen the scissors. We are often approached with such requests and the first thing we do is disassemble, clean, lubricate and reassemble the tool. The scissors chirp like they’ve just been taken out of their original packaging. The reaction of the “master” at this moment is worth a lot.
– Lubricate moving parts. You shouldn’t get too carried away. One drop is enough at the base of the connection (from the side of the rings). The procedure is recommended to be performed after washing and drying the screw group.
3. Service
Contact only certified centers, especially if you have an expensive instrument. Many sharpeners specialize in knives and manicure tools, and they don’t know about “convex”. They will return the same scissors to you, but with straight blades. The fact is that working with convection sharpening requires bulky expensive equipment, straight arms and a clear head. Rarely anyone manages to collect all three components under one roof. In Russia, few people specialize in this, so first you need to pretty much probe the soil. Some masters send their instrument for service as far as Japan.
4. Repair
There are many reasons why a tool may require serious intervention. The most common is falling to the floor. If you drop the scissors blades down, even their slight curvature leads to a violation of the geometry. As a result, we get either increased friction, which is not eliminated when the screw is loosened, or a complete loosening of the structure, when the scissors begin to “chew” the hair, and not cut.
Again, only certified service centers can help and not harm.
As you can see, the rules are quite simple and even obvious. But that’s exactly what works. Do not neglect them at every stage and your tool will last much longer.
